I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the Compact Solutions team. They have built a well-regarded services practice around Ab Initio but have also added skills around Informatica and IBM InfoSphere. Compact Solutions has developed a product called MetaDex to support metadata in a diverse environment.

Many organizations have blended environments, which makes it very difficult to capture metadata across heterogeneous tools. IBM InfoSphere Metadata Workbench can already pull in metadata from various sources like databases, CA Erwin and MicroStrategy. However, Compact Solutions extends these capabilities by enabling IBM InfoSphere Metadata Workbench to ingest metadata from other sources like Informatica, Microsoft SSIS, Oracle SQL and Teradata BTEQ. So, if you are an enterprise with Informatica, Teradata and Oracle, you can pull that metadata into the IBM InfoSphere Metadata Workbench and Business Glossary using MetaDex. A handful of customers have already moved down this path, and indications are that many more will follow. I have spoken to a large organization that just completed a MetaDex Proof of Concept with satisfactory results.

For non-IBM shops, MetaDex also supports Informatica Metadata Manager to represent SSIS, Teradata BTEQ scripts, Oracle SQL, etc. MetaDex also supports Ab Initio Metadata Hub to bring in metadata from various sources.

Definitely a product to watch.
